Upcoming Zombie Movies 2025

backdrop for the list Upcoming Zombie Movies 2025

We are at the end of 2024 and most fans of zombie movies probably got blindsided (in a good way) by Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End

2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year for zombie movies, and the zombie genre overall. Here is a quick overview.

For shows, some highlights include The Last of Us Season 2 and the start of production on All of Us Are Dead Season 2 (though probably not releasing until 2026).

When it comes to games we have Dying Light 2 DLC, State of Decay 3, Killing Floor 3, Probably Resident Evil 9, and tons of new stuff. Zombie games keep on selling and there is always something new to play.

Looking at movies, we have Romero's daughter, Tina Romero, entering the fray with her own movie, and speaking of Romero, his last installment in the Living Dead franchise may come out in 2025 or 2026, and let us not forget the documentary about Romero's Resident Evil movie. Last but not least, we have 28 Years Later (with 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple releasing in 2026).

But enough of the overview, let us take a closer look at some of the zombie movies coming out in 2025, listed in no particular order.

You can check out the movies page for all zombie movies releasing in 2025.

George A. Romero's Resident Evil (2025)

This is possibly the most important zombie movie that never made it to production. The story behind Romero's Resident Evil movie is that Constantin Film was considering George Romero as a director for the first-ever Resident Evil movie adaptation. Romero completed a draft of the screenplay but was turned down by Capcom. Instead, Paul W.S. Anderson got the job and the final product became Resident Evil starring Milla Jovovich, released in 2002.

This is one of those moments where you wish you could take a peek into an alternate reality and see what Romero could have done with the franchise and what possibilities that could have come to be. But you never know, since the screenplay is done, maybe Romero's estate and Capcom can do something with it, if let us say, Twilight of the Dead or Queens of the Dead is successful.

This documentary does a deep dive into the who, why and when's of Romero's Resident Evil, with new documents and interviews with key people in the industry and all that jazz. Also, the original voice actor of Wesker, Pablo Kuntz, is doing the narration.

28 Years Later (2025)

28 Months… err, 28 Years Later is finally here. The next installment in Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later franchise. 28 Days Later released in 2002, with 28 Weeks Later releasing in 2007. Now, 18 years later, we skip “28 Months Later” and immediately get 28 Years Later. Also, to add to the confusion, 28 Years Later will be a trilogy of movies.

Part 1, just called "28 Years Later" will release in 2025, while it is unclear if part 2, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, also will release in 2025 since both movies finished shooting late summer, or if they are opting for one movie per year. It is also unclear whether they are waiting with part 3 to gauge interest before fully committing or not.

Anyway, we are guaranteed at least two movies. 28 Years Later is about a young boy traversing the British wasteland with his dying mother in search of a doctor who can help her.

While the infected are about as fragile as regular humans and can die of starvation, it does look like Britain kept getting hammered by outbreaks for the last 28 years as the plot mentions that there are only a few uninfected communities left. They are either very unlucky or we may see some evolution of the rage virus. My bet is on the second alternative. We may also see one or two familiar faces in this movie, though it is unclear how big their roles will be.

Queens of the Dead (2025)

“During a zombie outbreak at a drag show in Brooklyn, drag queens and club kids must unite to battle the brain-craving undead. Setting aside personal conflicts, they harness their unique talents to combat the zombie menace.”

Tina Romero's Queens of the Dead came in from the left field and will be the first full-length movie as a writer and director. The initial information about the movie left some bad impressions. However, after the interview with Fangoria, it seems like Tina Romero has an excellent understanding of her father's legacy and wants to add to it, rather than make it her own or run it into the ground.

The movie will feature the usual "Romero zombie" and social commentary. It mixes drag queens, jump scares, gore, and amusing characters in a gun-free setting.

Romero also stated that it will introduce her as a filmmaker and her perspective, which she pointed out is different from her father's. She also mentioned that the zombies will have a “new flavor” added to them.

Plaguepits: The Torture Dead (2025)

It is unclear what to make of this movie, as there is very little information and currently no trailer to go on. The plot goes as follows: “Decayed medieval zombies use bizarre torture devices to take bloody revenge.”, which again, is not much to go on. What we can probably expect is a lot of gore, some interesting inventions, and zombies.

Crawlers (2025)

In this movie, the US is mostly wiped out and survivors are trying to escape to Mexico where a sanctuary is said to be. The plot mentions zombies, but from what we can guess from the still images, it is probably infected rather than zombies, due to looking more feral akin to 28 days later infected and less actually dead. The atmosphere in this movie looks great and will definitely be on my to-watch list.

Return of the Living Dead (2025)

Return of the Living Dead is making its comeback late next year with a new movie. While it shares the same title as the first movie from 1985, the new movie will be an new installment in the franchise, rather than a remake or reboot.

A short teaser featuring the Tarman has already dropped, as has the plot, which reveals it will be set in Christmas 1985, only 16 months after the incident in the first movie. It has also been stated that the trailer was produced with practical effects, on location, without CGI or the use of a greenscreen. Let's hope they keep the practical approach for the movie's effects.

We Bury the Dead (2025)

We Bury the Dead, featuring Daisy Ridley, was one of the movies on our watchlist for 2024. Sadly, it hasn't been released to the masses yet, aside from a possible premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival in Australia. At the time of writing, not even a teaser has been released. Still, we're hoping for a 2025 release.

The movie seems to be a more serious drama thriller, about a woman who joins a “body retrieval unit” in search of her husband, who is missing in the aftermath of a military experiment gone wrong. As she is burying the bodies, the corpses start to show signs of life.

There are so many paths the movie can take, and personally, I hope they do a more ominous pre-apocalypse type of movie, like Handling the Undead.
