Danny Boyle found the church of St Mary in Morpeth, Northumberland to be an ideal location for a number of key scenes for his dystopian vision in 28 Years Later.
The Church of England however, thought otherwise, and refused him to film his scenes at the historic 14th century gothic church. They rejected his application stating that filming his sequel at St Mary's would offend church doctrines and profane the house of god.

It was pointed out that the church had previously been used for the ITV crime drama Vera and other churches had filming that involved murder, science fiction, fantasy and horror.
Not everyone was backing the refusal. In the local parish, both the vicar of St Mary's and its warden supported the filming. But in the end the church court's word was final.
